Volunteer and be a mentor to students of various ages
Tutors help students excel academically by working with elementary, middle, or high school students at one of our after-school programs. Mentors build a friendship with a young person in need of a positive role model and pass along the academic and life skills they have learned. Other Volunteers teach workshops, share their life histories, invite our youth for a job shadowing day, and more. These one-time, short-term, and long-term opportunities can be tailored to fit a busy schedule.

Become a Mentor at Malcolm X Elementary School
Project Information
My name is Ariel Villano, and I am currently an undergraduate senior studying Elementary Education at American University. I am currently completing my student teaching assignment at Malcolm X Elementary School, located in Ward 8. My cooperating teacher, teaching team, and principal are interested in beginning a mentorship program between the DC community and our school. Initially, we are looking for mentors for a small group of our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. We feel that these students would especially benefit from having a positive role model with whom to communicate. Mentors will be required to communicate on a regular basis (approximately once every two weeks) with their assigned mentee. This communication can take the form of letters, emails, in-person visits, and/or Skype sessions.

Next Steps
If you are interested in applying to become a mentor, please fill out the application and return it via email to arielvillano@gmail.com. We will be using these application forms to match the interests of potential mentors with the interests and aspirations of our specific students. The goal is to find mentors in careers or areas of study and with hobbies or interests that match those of the student. Once your completed form has been received, we will review it to determine whether or not you would be a good fit for one of our students. At that point, an in-person informal interview would be conducted, necessary paperwork would be completed, and plan of action for your mentorship with this student would be outlined.

Once again, thank you for your interest in becoming a mentor!

Tutor with Community of Hope

At Community of Hope, we strive every day to provide our underserved neighbors with the building blocks they each need to create meaningful lives and a better future. By doing so, we believe all families, including children, in Washington, DC will be healthy, stably housed, well educated, and financially secure.

Our wide-ranging programs address the array of challenges faced by homeless and low-income families with children. Our federally-qualified health centers meet the primary healthcare needs of the un- and under-insured. Through our housing programs, homeless families find stable homes and case management services to link them with resources such as job referrals, counseling, and housing.  Our educational programs provide mentors and tutors to work with the children, to help them overcome the instability created by homelessness.

What we are looking for are childcare/tutoring volunteers at 2 of our locations- the Girard St. Shelter and Hope Apartments. Volunteers provide child care for children over 18 months. Volunteering for child care is very rewarding.  After completing homework, children may read or play an educational game. We usually see 3-10 youth daily, and we try to schedule 3-6 volunteers. Not only is this a great opportunity to work with young children, but it also provides support for their parents who are engaged in ongoing educational opportunities. Volunteers are encouraged to initiate projects and ways to engage youth.

Monday-Friday, 3:30pm-6:30pm at Girard and 6:30-8:00pm at Hope Apartments. The specific tasks are as follows:

1. Maintain a safe environment for the children, enforcing rules.

2. Work individually or in small groups on engaging activities such as: arts and crafts, reading, role playing, and games. Weather permitting, this can also include chaperoning field trips to the nearby playground.

3. Help children with homework, as needed.

Contact akrasner@cohdc.org for more info.
